Abstract:
Although language disorder interferes with the communication of patients with aphasia, they utilize other modalities of communication such as prosody, facial expression, and gesture. Models of how language and prosody synchronize to add selective prominence of information in personal narratives require empirical validation. The case of Tim Hind, a middle-aged, English-speaking man with chronic Broca’s aphasia, was selected for this project. Hind's therapy sessions demonstrate that his narratives are spontaneously and naturally embedded in conversations, which contributes to the analysis of the relationship between language and pitch under natural human communication. Quantitative data from this case study may contribute to the design of aphasia intervention.
