Abstract:
While known differences exist between varieties of spoken Arabic, descriptive texts on colloquial Arabic focus on single Arabic varieties. Taking data from texts aiming to teach Arabic varieties, this study aims to compare on a morphemic level the following varieties of Arabic; Levantine Arabic, Egyptian Arabic, Moroccan Arabic, and Iraqi Arabic. This study aims to analyze the differences in possessive suffixes between varieties of Arabic in order to present how possessive suffixes vary in terms of phonological constraints, which two varieties possess the most phonologically-similar suffixes, and which variety’s suffixes phonologically differs the most from the rest.
