Abstract:
Wireless powered neural stimulation and recording is crucial for the long-term study of the animals’ behavior for the treatment of chronic neuropathic diseases. Headstage based neural implants have become one of the popular methods for neural stimulation. In this work, a wireless powered system has been developed for providing power to a lightweight 3-D printed headstage which consists of a receiver (RX) coil, a rectifier, and a µm-sized light-emitting-diode (LED). A multi-layered transmitter (TX) coil is designed to provide uniform power transmission over the 14 cm × 14 cm mouse behavioral measurement area. The proposed system provides power to the headstage with inductive coupling, where two coils of the same resonant frequency couple and the change in current at one coil induces a voltage across the second coil. The design is an open-loop system where the multi-layer transmitter inductively couples with the headstage to deliver power to an LED that is implanted in the brain of the mouse for neural stimulation.
