Abstract:
Diethyl carbonate is a compound used in erythromycin injections, batteries, and cleaner fuels, whose solvent coefficients were previously unknown. By experimentally testing the solubility of different solutes with known descriptors in DEC and doing a linear regression using the Abraham Model, we can successfully determine the solvent coefficients of DEC/water system. Moreover, by comparing the coefficients of DEC to those of known biological systems, we could determine the mimicking ability of the DEC/water system. If DEC/water partitioning can serve as an effective mimic of a biological system, future experiments could be done using the DEC/water system rather than biological systems such as animal organs.
