Abstract:
This study aims to investigate what aspects of memes that lack a text overlay assist in their comprehension by internet users. From previous studies we understand that memes can be considered multimodal constructions, with both textual and visual elements, and that memes are spread across internet communities by users. While memes typically include a text overlay, it is becoming increasingly common to see memes lacking in explicit text and despite this internet users continue to comprehend and spread them. An online survey will be used to collect quantitative and qualitative data to assist in determining how users process and comprehend memes lacking explicit text. The survey consists of ten different meme formats, and participants were asked if they recognized each format and what factors affected their recognition. This study will analyze how comprehension of memes is affected by age, membership to differing internet communities, and non-visual qualities of memes.
