Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine various factors; social media use, identified generation, locational socioeconomic status, and race and ethnicity as indicators for an individuals’ level of Empathy. Using the Adolescent Measure of Empathy and Sympathy scale (AMES) and data from Amazon Mechanical MTurk, we can examine specifically; cognitive empathy, affective empathy, and sympathy. Through this study we are further exploring the impact that an individual’s SES will have on their empathy. Generations are formed based off of characteristics ranging from environmental factors (such as politics, wars, and technology, etc.) to the shifting of societal motives. This study will also help us to better understand the similarities and differences between generational traits and how emotional traits transform with age. This research will analyze data from an online, self-report survey distributed through Amazon Mechanical Turk. Each participant received $0.15 for the completion of the survey. We predict that there will not be a significant difference in Empathy levels across the four generations. We also predict that cognitive empathy will be higher amongst all generations than affective empathy. Increasing our awareness of the emotional and behavioral effects of social media is very important for those using technology and media as a means for educating our youth.
