Abstract:
Epilepsy is a brain condition concerning disturbed nerve activity that causes seizures. Dr. Lin Li’s biomedical engineering lab studies EEGs (electroencephalograms) and fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) scans to predict epilepsy formation. This research found evidence that HYP ictal onsets may be caused by tonic inhibition on PIN (pathologically interconnected neuron) clusters generating pHFOs (pathological high-frequency oscillations). Additionally, studying the early period of epileptogenesis with the factors of global network features and small-worldness can provide evidence for predicting epilepsy using neuroimaging tools. An automatic detection algorithm detecting seizures in long SEEG recordings using the Morlet wavelet transform was also designed.
