As media diversifies in its modes of representation, it raises questions of authenticity and honest portrayals of Black LGBT+ characters. This lack of representation reflects the historic discrimination that this community has faced. This study examines the way that Black LGBT+ narratives are written, who is writing them, and the historical context of this media. Additionally, the study considers the political and sociological environments that are conducive to misrepresentation. The study will be conducted primarily through the study of films, in addition to academic articles and their supporting data. The goal of the study is to investigate the portrayals of the Black LGBT+ community in media, recognize the need for creating storytellers who hold awareness of this community’s ongoing challenges, as well as help to diversify those leading the creation of media.
