What is the Britt Poster Award?

The John Britt Poster Award honors the late John Britt who led the Honors program at Lee College, perhaps the most successful community college honors program in the nation, from 1995 until his retirement in 2012. Under his mentorship, Lee College students frequently won prestigious awards at both the regional and national levels, and many had their work accepted for publication. In 1998, he won the Bryan Teaching Award for best history teacher in the state of Texas, the first community college instructor to earn that designation. In 2003 he served as President of GPHC, and in 2018 the GPHC Poster Award was renamed in his honor.

  • A maximum of three Britt Poster awards may be awarded for each of two categories:
    • lower-division students who have fewer than 60 hours of college/university credit (at the deadline of submissions), and,
    • upper-division students who have earned 60 hours or more of college/university credit
  • Submissions for the Britt Poster Competition must be approved by each institution's honors director and indicate the director's advocacy of the excellence of the work
  • Each institution may submit a maximum of two Britt Poster Competition nominees
  • Must come from dues-paying institutions
  • Directors should note that "academic credit" includes dual enrollment courses taken during high school and hours received by transfer from another institution.
  • Honors directors may nominate two students to enter the Britt Poster Award Competitions. However, the topics of each entry must focus on a different, unrelated research project. If projects are the same or closely related for both entries, both will be eliminated for consideration for an award.
  • Must be submitted using the GPHC Britt Poster Competition Submission Form
