Howard and Nancy Terry established the Terry Foundation in 1986 as a way to help future
generations of Texans help themselves. Mr. Terry, a longtime Houston resident, was
so grateful for the financial assistance he received to attend college, that he dedicated
his time and resources to giving future generations of Texans this same opportunity.
The Terry Foundation Board oversees a perpetual endowment that provides college scholarships
for students who have demonstrated the capacity to become outstanding future leaders
and who need financial assistance to achieve their goals in higher education. The
program was honored in 2010 by the National Association of Scholarship Providers in
being named National Scholarship Provider of the Year. Chartered to exist into perpetuity,
the Foundation is designed to continue in the future to add scholarships each year.
Howard & Nancy Terry were active in the management of the Foundation up until the very end of both of their lives in 2012. The Foundation has become larger than they ever imagined, fulfilling in the process their dreams of making a difference in the lives of students across the state. Despite his extraordinary success in ventures that made the Terry Foundation possible, Howard Terry observed that "the Terry Foundation is the most important thing I've done in my life, because it's enabled me to help more people than I would have ever been able to help otherwise."

Terry Scholars are challenged to achieve their highest potential in SCHOLARSHIP, LEADERSHIP, and SERVICE - to their university, the State of Texas, and the world. United by their common excellence and motivated by their pledge to give back to the Foundation, Scholars build their own COMMUNITY of fellowship and mutual respect on campus and as part of the ever-expanding network of Terry Scholar Alumni. These core values serve as the pillars of the Terry Scholarship Program.
In order to keep the Terry Scholarship in effect, and in addition to any other requirements that the university may impose, a Scholar must:
*If a Scholar's cumulative grade point average drops below the 2.5 required minimum, the student will be placed on probation for one additional semester and given the opportunity to bring the grade point average back into compliance. If at the end of the probationary period the cumulative grade point average is still below 2.5, the Scholar will be terminated from the program.
