Abstract:
In 2020 over 10 million acres burned, more than twice the previous year (NOAA 2021). Wildfires emit large amounts of particulate matter that can then wash out of the atmosphere with rain (i.e., “smoke-affected rainfall events”). We developed an approach to identify smoke-affected rainfall events and the burned areas potentially contributing smoke during these events. We identified one major smoke-affected rainfall event at the site with two fires, burning 13,844 acres and primarily evergreen forest (73.7%) and shrubland (23.8%). Future research will employ this approach to better understand how smoke affects the chemical composition of rain.
