Honors Peer Mentors: Navigating the Nest is a peer-to-peer mentorship program designed to help first-year students acclimate to life in the Honors College at UNT. The program features program-wide events designed to foster group connection and individualized check-in support from mentors. Our mentors are experienced upper-class Honors College students who support their mentees as they navigate their new academic home (the “nest”).
First-year students benefit from participation as mentees:
- Receive support navigating the transition to college from an experienced, dedicated peer mentor.
- Develop greater familiarity with the Honors College and life at UNT, including opportunities for academic and social enrichment available to Honors College students.
- Cultivate a sense of belonging and comradery with their mentor and mentorship program peers.
- Professional development opportunities facilitated by peer mentors and program leaders, designed to help mentees excel at UNT.
Mentee applications for the Fall 2024 semester will open in Summer 2024.
Mentors benefit from participation as mentors:
- Mentors will receive 1 hour of Honors Credit toward Honors Academic Awards.
- Mentors can earn a mentorship skills training certificate.
- Opportunities to engage closely with Honors College staff leaders and network with alumni.
- Chances to help shape positive experiences for first-year Honors College students.
- Communication, leadership, and event management skill training and growth opportunities.
Qualifications & Requirements for Navigating the Nest Mentors:
- Mentors must have completed their first year as an Honors College student and be in good academic standing.
- Mentors should be actively involved in the Honors College and/or on campus.
- Mentors attend a day-long mentorship training the week before classes begin in the Fall.
- Mentors attend bi-weekly mentor training sessions with fellow peer mentors throughout the Fall.
- Mentors partner with fellow peer mentors to design social engagement activities for first-year mentees.

HNRS 1000 is the introductory Honors College course available to first-year Honors College students. HNRS 1000 Mentors partner closely with HNRS 1000 Instructors to enhance overall student learning experiences in the HNRS 1000 course. Mentors help facilitate in-class learning by introducing upper-class student experiences during class discussions. They also champion learning outside the classroom by leading out-of-class learning experiences. HNRS 1000 Mentors ensure that first-year students get the most from their HNRS 1000 introduction and start their Honors College academic journey prepared for success.
Students can enroll in HNRS 1000 while registering for classes.
Mentors benefit from participation as mentors:
- HNRS 1000 Mentors receive a $500 stipend for completion of mentor expectations.
- Mentors can earn a mentorship skills training certificate.
- Classroom facilitation experience and mentorship with Honors College faculty/staff instructors.
- Chances to help shape positive learning experiences for HNRS 1000 students.
Qualifications & Requirements for HNRS 1000 Mentors:
- Mentors must have previously served as an Honors Peer Mentor and be in good academic standing.
- Mentors should be actively involved in the Honors College and/or on campus.
- Preference is given to applicants who took HNRS 1000 as first-year students.
- Mentors attend a day-long mentorship training the week before classes begin in the Fall.
- Mentors meet weekly with their HNRS 1000 instructor to discuss class activities and student support.
- Mentors meet monthly with all HNRS 1000 Mentors for ongoing mentor training sessions in the Fall.
