Abstract:
Aphasia is a communicative disorder that results from brain damage often due to stroke. Incidence is the occurrence of a disease in the population during a specific period of time. The purpose of this review is to critique, compare, and contrast the methodological approaches to the epidemiology of aphasia. A four-stage methodology highlighted 16 relevant articles. Articles measured incidence through either of two main approaches: analyzing databases and observed stroke populations. Inconsistencies in operationalizing incidence rates for aphasia include different tests, unreported approaches, data gathering, etc. In the future, standards can be set to operationalize collecting the incidence of aphasia.
