This study focuses on the slang term “Karen” by investigating if the term is a slur based on English speakers’ perception of this word. Previous research focused on how hate speech could be disarmed by the community, but were hateful terms used against marginalized communities (Johnston, 2018). Participants were given scenarios in which people have been called “Karen”. The participants were asked on a scale from 1-5 if they would refer to the person as “Karen”, explain why, and if they consider “Karen” a slur. Results from 86 English speakers show that most English speakers do not see “Karen” as a slur, but as an insult for someone's behavior.
