Abstract:
This study investigates the use of vocal fry in male American English speakers. Vocal fry is an irregular form of phonation (Meerschman 2017). Vocal fry in female speech has been studied approximately three times more than male speech (Dallaston and Docherty 2011). This study addresses the following questions: in what environments do men use vocal fry and at what frequency do male speakers use it. Pitch, position and vocal fold vibration were analyzed in Praat. Each speaker's frequency of usage differed. From these findings, it can be concluded that vocal fry is a natural part of phonation.
