Abstract:
Lesquerella (Physaria fendleri) is a promising oilseed crop. The oil produced contains specialized hydroxylated and unsaturated fatty acids that provide amphipathic and low temperature properties. The oil can be utilized in biofuel, plastic, grease, soaps, paints, and cosmetics. Cytosolic acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACCase) is a critical enzyme responsible for fatty acid elongation. By introduction of a known cytosolic ACCase inhibitor, haloxyfop-P-methyl, manipulation of fatty acid composition is observed with no statistically significant changes to total concentration of metabolites. The results are pivotal for investigation of fatty acid biochemical mechanisms and targets in genetic engineering to improve oil yield of Lesquerella.
