Abstract:
Oxytocin is a neuropeptide long known for its classical effects in the body associated with child rearing, pair bonding and giving birth, but more recently it has been associated with a variety of behaviors in the brain including fostering in-group cohesion and out-group punishment. Known to be active in areas of the brain that deal with choice, reward, addiction, and learning we are examining whether administration of oxytocin will change latency of responding with both known and stranger rats in a cage release paradigm where one rat will be able to release a captive rat held in a restraining tube simply for social reward and access to the captive rat.
