Abstract:
As a part of Dr. Aoyama's team, I analyzed the word sock (/sok/) within 64 different participants. These participants included 16 native English (NE) adults, 16 native English (NE) children, 16 native Japanese (NJ) adults, and 16 native Japanese (NJ) children. The purpose of this study was to analyze the differences between the American English sound /s/. We looked at the word /sok/ as a whole as well as focusing on the sound /s/. This research helped us conclude that the proportional /s/ duration was similar across groups. This showed that the speaker adjusts their speaking rate. The native Japanese speakers spoke softer than the native English, but not necessarily longer.
