Abstract: 
The use of the social media website Twitter to disseminate news across the globe has become a major factor in the way that news companies choose to present news to the public. Headlines are used to inform and intrigue readers in different ways across different platforms. Previous research defined the features that make the language of headlines unique and analyzed which features were displayed in popular headlines. However, much of the previous research available on the topic analyzes the use of headlines in a more traditional setting. This study focuses on the ways in which headlines are presented on Twitter and specifically seeks to answer the questions: (1) Are the features of capitalization, punctuation, emoji use, persuasive speech, and fact based speech used in the headlines that appear on the explore page of the social media site Twitter? (2) Is there a difference in the way that these features are represented across the news, sports, fun, and entertainment categories the explore page of the social media site Twitter? A qualitative approach is used to approach these questions. Fifty headlines from each category were collected and coded for the features of capitalization, punctuation, emoji use, persuasive speech, and fact based speech. This study describes the patterns of the features found within each category of headlines.
