Abstract:
We compare the abundance of tardigrades in different habitats and substrates on an island compared to a mainland forest. We hypothesize that the tardigrade on the island Robinson Crusoe Island (RCI) is not different compared to that on the Nahuelbuta Mountain Range (NMR). The proportion of samples with tardigrades was similar for RCI (59.6%; n=52) and NMR (63.1%; n=122). For RCI, in decreasing order, tardigrades were more frequently found in habitats of trees then rocks and finally ground, whereas this ranking for substrates in NMR was rocks, tree, ground. This is the first comparison of tardigrades abundances between similar ecosystems.
