Abstract:
Existing linguisitc research on non-native speaker's interpretation of spoken stress in English exists only in reference to phonological recognition and reproduction of native speaker's speech patterns. This research has shown that as much as 93% of even fluent English speaking non-native Japanese people cannot consistently identify subtle differences in spoken stress (Chapman, 2007). This is due to a fundamental difference between the stress production of syllables in Japanese and English (Hosaka, 2018). This research seeks to study the linguistic intuitions and interpretations non-native English speaking Japanese speaker’s have when regarding conversational English stress functions not present in their native language.
