Abstract:
Research has shown that teenage mothers are the least likely group of individuals to take part in prenatal care, but are the most likely to benefit. Due to negative social perceptions, teenage mothers may be hesitant to reach out for both social and medical help regarding their pregnancies, thus leading to various adverse pregnancy outcomes for both mother and child. The purpose of this presentation is to examine potential negative consequences regarding a lack of prenatal care, then propose a study that explores teen mothers’ perceptions of their pregnancies and barriers preventing their use of prenatal care. This study would then be used by healthcare professionals to increase resiliency and encourage teen mothers to utilize prenatal services.
