Abstract:
Lithium disilicate glass-ceramics are extensively used by the dental industry for restorative purposes. When researching biocompatible glasses, one has to consider the interaction of the glass-ceramic with the environment of the biological system over a period of time. In order to fabricate glass-ceramics with desirable properties and predict their behavior over time, it is important to first understand the structure of the glass as it is linked to the properties it demonstrates. The aim of this research is to study the structural relaxation of lithium disilicate glass around the glass transition temperature as the properties of structural glass have been found to be dependent on production history such as the cooling rate. Properties like thermal expansion, heat capacity, and shear modulus have been found to change around the glass transition as it undergoes structural rearrangement. This study will be carried out by simulating the structure using the Molecular Dynamics approach as it can help study the structure and dynamics that cannot be experimentally achieved.
